Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: wtf is GROK?

"Grok is a verb that connotes knowledge greater than that which can be sensed by an outside observer. It is an understanding beyond empathy and intimacy. In grokking, one experiences the literal capabilities and frame of reference of the subject. The verb can be used both transitively and intransitively; in the transitive sense the Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "to understand intuitively or by empathy; to establish rapport with", while in the intransitive sense it is defined as "to empathize or communicate sympathetically with; also, to experience enjoyment." The OED also specifies the alternate spelling "grock".
Robert A. Heinlein originally coined the term as part of a fictional Martian language in his 1961 novel Stranger in a Strange Land, where it literally means "drink" and figuratively refers to the merging of essence that encompasses the theme of the book. The term has become part of the English language, attested in dictionaries and used most by certain counterculture groups and in hacker culture.

After reading this and also remembering the Heinlein book, it all became clear. I like the idea of "merging of essence", applies pefectly to Mr. Cush's original idea. Excellent call, sir. I guess you do work with books. Let's hear it for the literate"

We have a group get together to listen to the same show(s) at the same time via streaming, cd, iPod, whatever you happen to have.

NEW: I have set up a chat room for the Grok at with the following URL:
I believe our "Room" number is the 284370529904
Password is GROK
This "Free" chat room does not do live updates, so you will need to hit the "Refresh" button on a regular basis, but I believe the notes will post a lot faster than they do here. This was the best one I could find that did not involve downloading software or even paying fees.
One feature I like is that you can hit a button and see who's participating at any given time

Shows being listened to chronologically:

This will start at 12 PM EST for the first 4 shows. People will come and go from the group as we listen, but we're hoping everyone gets in for some of it. We will run the 5th show Sunday morning at 10 EST. Folks will comment about the shows and songs here and the chat room listed above. Hope this fills in some blanks.
